“Kids: they dance before they learn there is anything that isn’t music.” ~ William Stafford
Students at Fair Haven Day School have the opportunity to enroll in extra-curricular activities held weekly during and after school. If you are interested in any of the following programs, please consult the Day School Office for more information.
A popular way of expression for many children is through music and movement. Fair Haven offers 45-minute combined ballet and tap class once a week for students ages two thru Kindergarten. Each spring the children in this class participate in a recital for family and friends.
The combined ballet and tap class is taught by Mary Ferguson, former member of the Houston Ballet. Mary also danced professionally in New York and has taught in and around the Greater Houston area for the past 20 years.
Show-Kids is theater in its most playful sense! This is a non-competitive class in which children learn to move with self-confidence and joy as they explore dance concepts and build valuable physical skills. The students develop imagination through theater games and fun improvisational exercises. They strengthen their mind and body and enjoy dancing with others as they layer music, stories, and songs into an experience of creative fun!
Arzan Gonda instructs this class. Some of her qualifications include: an M.A. degree in Counseling Psychology; 18 years of experience in professional theater and dance; 12 years of experience teaching singing, dancing, and theater to children ages 2-12; and 8 years involvement with workshops, seminars, benefits, and performances for children with special needs.
Show-Kids classes are taught for 45 minutes once a week for students ages 3-6.
A unique and exciting gymnastics program open to all Toddlers thru Kindergarten-aged students, Tumble Tykes is designed to teach gross motor skills and movement acquisition through basic gymnastics. Classes take place in a unique, fun and safe environment — a custom-designed Tumble Tykes padded school bus. Classes are offered at both the non-structured level (emphasizing large muscle motor skills and coordination) for ages three and younger, and a more structured level for ages three to six (emphasizing a variety of gymnastics skills). Thirty-minute lessons are offered once a week for the younger children and in 45-minute sessions for Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten children.
Tumble Tykes hires enthusiastic teachers with backgrounds in early childhood education and or/teaching. Two instructors, trained in CPR and First Aid, teach skills, lead imaginative games, and provide report cards every other month, detailing the progress of the children.
